Critic's Reviews

Critic's Pick: * *

Classic Viennese decoration is given a spare, contemporary treatment in the posh Austrian restaurant behind the merry Bavarian bierstübe. It’s formal, correct and quite clever, but a tad too soulless to be truly attractive. Ditto the food—precise interpretations of Austrian haute cuisine that steer clear of passion...Avuncular, old school service suits the room. A dozen or so Austrian wines shine from a ho-hum list.

On the Menu:

Tender sweetbreads and mussels lie on a hefty pasta sheet energized by thyme and sauces of cream and vinegar. A rich red pepper cream soup pours out of a whole pepper when the waiter lifts it away; its shy flavour lets sturdy lobster ravioli steal the show. Tafelspitz is the star dish—tender braised beef in a gorgeous consommé with creamed spinach and wee jugs of chive sour cream and apple horseradish. Only mushy rösti spoils the effect. Cream quite properly dominates the dessert and coffee menus. From an army of traditional Viennese cakes, sachertorte looks perfect but lacks chocolate intensity.
